 RELEASE: Monitoring Studio KM v8.6.51

Sentry Software is releasing version 8.6.51 of Monitoring Studio KM, the high-performance tool that allows you to set up the monitoring of almost any application for which there is no out-of-the-box monitoring available, with no coding.

New features

  • Acknowlegde Alerts
This new KM command allows you to acknowledge all alerts for a specific instance
  • Configuration Variables
Two new configuration variables were added respectively to the Web Request and the WBEM Queries application classes:
    - /MASAI/SENTRY8/windowsWebRequestScriptPath: to specify the path to the VB script used to perform web requests on Windows servers
    - /MASAI/SENTRY8/wbemJarPath: to specify the path to the jar file used to perform WBEM queries

Enhancements and Changes

  • Dynamic Object Builder
The option allowing you to define if and how Monitoring Studio must trigger an alert when the Dynamic Item, containing the extracted line, is missing from one collect to another has been improved to offer additional alert types: Trigger an INFORMATION, Trigger a WARNING, Trigger an ALARM.
The way Monitoring Studio removes missing objects in the console can now be configured to : Never, As soon as they are missing or When they are missing "n" times in a row.
  • Alert Actions
The Email Alert Action tool has been improved to allow you to send an email alert action to multiple recipients.
  • SW_FOLDERS
The new parameter "LongestTimeFileRemainsInFolder" has been added to the SW_FOLDERS application class to displays the longest time an existing file has been placed in a folder.
  • Alert Action Macros
The macro %{FOLDER_OLDEST_REMAINING_FILE] has been added to the list of Alert Action Macros to provide the name of the oldest remaining file in the folder.

Corrected issues

  • HTTP Request
HTTP Request did not trigger an alert when a username/password was configured and the web site was stopped.
  • Polling Intervals and Alert Actions
Polling intervals and Alert Actions could not be set on older versions of the PATROL Agent because the "parameterType" instance variable was missing.
  • Exit Status Codes
They were not properly interpreted by the Monitoring Studio interface on older versions of the PATROL Agent.
  • SNMP OIDs
COUNTER-type values were not properly interpreted.
  • JMX Polling
The JMX monitoring would stop working when the application server was restarted, resulting in high CPU usage.

Please read the Release Notes to get a complete list of new features, enhancements and corrected issues included in version 8.6.51.

PATCH: Patch for BPM Express Monitoring Studio 2.5.00

What does it fix?

The application class SEN_MS_NUMERIC has been improved to:

  • Properly rescale the extracted numeric value
  • Process exponential character "E" as a mathematical value and not as a string when extracting numeric value from a column

The application class SEN_MS_STRING has been modified to properly set the parameters Count(HB) and Count(LB) values to "0" when no line matches the String Search. However, the parameters Count(HB) and Count(LB) are set to "Null" when the parsed content is empty.

The application class SEN_MS_SNMP has been fixed to properly retrieve the SNMP table content when the table has only one entry. An infinite loop that could occur when finding the available column numbers in an SNMP table has been fixed.

The application class SEN_MS_FILE has been improved to manage the following issues:

  • The most recently modified files are now correctly detected on UNIX/Linux platform
  • A double check on the SSH protocol availability test has been implemented to make sure an alarm is triggered when a collected remote element does not respond to SSH connections anymore.

The application class SEN_MS_OSCOMMAND now supports the execution of command on a remote element with the option of WMI Impersonation Level (Impersonate, Delegate).

The software contains the following new features:

  • SEN_MS_FILE : Wild characters ('*' and '?') can now be provided in the file path in addition to the file name.
  • SQL scripts can now be executed using the %{FromRSM:filename} macro. The SQL script has to be stored on the RSM.
How to install the patch?
Unzip the BPM-Express-MonitoringStudio-2.5.07.zip file. Login to Portal as superadmin and upload the resulting .par file.

"BMC Performance Manager Express Monitoring Studio by Sentry Software 2.5.07" appears in the Performance Manager list. Select the corresponding checkbox and click [Publish].

Monitoring Studio Express is then automatically upgraded on all the monitored elements. This process takes a few minutes.

When the migration process is completed, the 2.5.07 version is marked as "Published". Download

RELEASE : BPM Express for Hardware v2.7.05

Sentry Software is releasing version 2.7.05 of BMC Performance Manager Express for Hardware, the software that monitors the health of your servers hardware within BMC Portal.

New features and enhancements

HP-UX

HP-UX Servers with Smart Array Raid controller can now be monitored using the SAUtil command / connector. (Requires Root)

On HP-UX Servers only disks that are attached to pre-discovered internal disk controllers are shown & monitored. This is to prevent the monitoring of external SAN disks

On HP-UX servers, the networkCard was not discovered properly

Disk Controllers

Additional information such as BiosVersion, FirmwareVersion, DriverVersion of the Diskcontroller are now displayed on the parameter Locator

Cisco SAN Switch

Batteries are now monitored on Cisco SAN Switches that are monitored via Telnet / SSH

IBM System Storage DS series

On IBM DS disks systems monitored using smcli, the Primordial Array is now monitored correctly

Telnet/SSH

The ROOT credential test for protocols Telnet and SSH fails if the passwords for both the connection login and root login are same. Issue fixed

Hardware (Solaris), Hardware (Linux), Hardware (Other), Hardware (HP-UX), Hardware (Storage), Hardware (Switch), Hardware (AIX), Hardware (OpenVMS), Hardware (Tru64)

Portal froze when trying to expand the discovered NetworkCard instance

Sun Servers running Solaris

Illegal requests messages no longer shown. Illegal requests and other soft errors were removed from the errorcount calcuation in KM 1.6, but the Illegal Request message would still appear in the console if Illegal Requests were detected.

All disk slices are now tested before declaring a disk "failed". Previous versions of the Iostat connector tested only s2 or the first available slice depending on the version of the KM.

A longer timeout for the prtpicl command has been added to prevent false alarms.

Only fans that have a valid speed or status are shown.

Support for x86 Xeon processors has been added. The "SPARC T1/T2 Processors" connector is thus now called "Multi-core Processors".

The Sun Network connector now also uses the "dladm" to collect network information on x86 machines. Use of the kstat command has been removed.

The network card state of "unplummed" is now treated correctly.

The status of non-Sun disks is now collected correctly when using Sudo.

Sun Servers running Solaris monitored by XSCF cards (Mx000)

More information is now collected about each component (Fru, S/N, etc...)

CPU Power Consumption added.

IO Boards Power Consumption added.

Power Supplied on IO Boards (those listed as type PS#) monitoring added.

The version 1.5.00 is also the code base for our upcoming SAN monitoring solution: Storage Sentry. This SAN monitoring solution will actually be a simple add-on for Hardware Sentry KM 1.5.00 and will support the following devices:

 RELEASE: Monitoring Studio KM v8.6.50

Sentry Software is releasing version 8.6.50 of Monitoring Studio KM, the high-performance tool that allows you to set up the monitoring of almost any application for which there is no out-of-the-box monitoring available, with no coding.

New features and enhancements

This version provides several major new features that enhance monitoring and analysis performances of Monitoring Studio:

  • Configuration Report Output Format
Two output formats were added to the configuration report: XLM and CSV
  • Application classes
New parameters were added to SW_SNMP_POLLING, SW_JMX and SW_NUMBERS:
    • Delta to display the difference between values collected during two consecutive polling
    • DeltaPerSecond to display the value corresponding to "Delta" divided by the elapsed time in seconds between the collection times
  • Macro
The macro %{NTEVENT_LAST_MATCHING_CONTENT} displays the content of the NT event
  • KM Command
The KM Command "Trigger a KM Discovery" forces a discovery of all objects for the monitored system
  • Supported environment
The Java MBean Polling (JMX) feature now supports the polling of WebSphere v.7.x environment

The version also includes several enhancements to existing features :

  • Application Constants
They are now interpreted by the user interface. The interpretation upon collection is also processed as previously
  • Discovery interval
It can now be customized from once every 5 minutes to once every 24 hours
  • Dynamic Objects
    • Dynamic thresholds can now be applied to dynamic objects.
    • In some cases the regular expression engine run by Monitoring Studio on the dynamic object class to perform a data extraction would let unwanted data to be used to build dynamic objects.
    • An issue occurred in some environments where the "view parameter output" button in the Monitoring Studio Dynamic Object wizard was empty.
    • An internal conflict could occur in the creation process of dynamical Patrol Object ID that led to the dynamical objects not being created.
  • DYNAMIC_RETURN_OUTPUT now properly returns the Dynamic extracted line value
  • Polling Interval
The Display Object Report did not show the correct polling interval when the interval was set to once a day or once a week
  • File Monitoring and String Search
The monitoring and parsing of LOG files on OpenVMS servers have been improved. The ftell() PSL function does not always return the proper position in the file being monitored: a workaround as been implemented. The OpenVMS BACKUP command would also sometimes restore previously deleted temporary files. This would prevent Monitoring Studio from parsing the new file content.
  • SNMP Polling
When looking for a String or extracting a Numeric Value, the data was not properly parsed.
  • JMX Polling
This feature has been greatly optimized and uses less resources than the previous version.
  • The Numeric Extraction feature now supports numeric values with implicit 0. ( i.e.: value ".45" is seen as "0.45").

Please read the Release Notes to get a complete list of new features, enhancements and corrected issues included in version 2.7.00.

PATCH: Patch for Monitoring Studio Express 2.5.00

Fixed bugs:
  • Problem in validating the ssl certificate explicitly for HTTPS based sites when performing a Web request.
  • Problem in executing a script file remotely using the class Remote Command Execution. The script file placed on the RSM was not correctly identified by BPM Express Monitoring Studio.
  • Large values (ex: 117637394793) were not extracted properly when we perform numeric value extraction from a file, output of a command, SQL query, etc.
  • By default Portal displays large values in exponential form (ex: 55000000 to 5.5283104e7). The default setting was changed to display the value in decimal form.
  • In Portal 2.6, BPM Express Monitoring Studio didn’t recognize the new RSM directory structure. The default directory RSM25 was considered and was also created on the %RSM_HOME% path even if the RSM version was 2.6.
  • Monitoring Studio Express did not take into account the specified column number when extracting a numeric value from a file, output of a command, SQL query, etc.

RELEASE: BPM Express for Hardware 2.3.18

This new update to our agent-less hardware monitoring solution for BMC Portal adds full support for the 5.20 version of the IBM Director Agent on both Windows and Linux.
It also fixes an issue that prevented the monitoring of IBM BladeCenter chassis.

A significant improvement will also be noticed on the RSM when monitoring servers through the WMI protocol (the many CSCRIPT.EXE processes are now gone). We recommend that you download and install this newest update if you are experiencing performance issues in Portal with more than 150 elements per RSM.

PATCH: Full support for IBM Director 5.20.x

This patch adds full support for the version 5.20.x of the IBM Director Agent in Hardware Sentry KM version 1.4.00 on Windows. Prior to this patch, Hardware Sentry was not able to discover and monitor disks on IBM xSeries servers with the IBM Director Agent 5.20.x.

Note: Sentry Software recommends to install the very latest iteration of the Director Agent, currently 5.20.2.

This patch is only for Windows systems (it will not change how the KM works on Linux). Full support for the IBM Director Agent version 5.20.x on Linux will be provided in the version 1.5.00 of Hardware Sentry KM.

As all of our newest products, Monitoring Studio Express is available for purchase from BMC as any other BMC product (same BMC contract, same conditions, same SLA, same support, etc.).
