BMC Performance Manager Express Monitoring Studio consolidates diverse monitoring needs with a single solution for the BMC Portal environment.

It enables the monitoring of regular or custom applications, devices and non-standard technologies for which there are no out-of-the-box solutions. It maximizes the availability of your applications and enables you to bring in critical business-related information within the Portal environment.

Specifically designed as a Performance Manager for the BMC Portal, it is to be installed on just one server, and the diverse monitoring tools are consequently available for all elements in the environment.

How It Works
Rapid set-up and no coding: Setting up the monitoring with any of the tools follows the same simple procedure:

1. Select the tool and specify what is to be monitored and where it is located
2. Enter connection and user credentials
3. Set alert thresholds on parameters of the monitored instances
4. Zoom in closer by setting-up advanced string searches and/or numeric value extractions that build graphs

  • LOG file parsing: monitor and parse remote LOG files on Windows, UNIX and Linux
  • Remote command execution: remotely execute commands on Windows, UNIX and Linux systems and analyze their outputs
  • JMX polling: retrieve the values of MBean (Java) objects in JBoss, JOnAS, WebSphere, WebLogic application servers and standalone Java applications
  • SNMP polling: retrieve values of single OIDs and SNMP tables
  • SQL query execution: execute and analyze the results of SQL queries (Oracle Database Server, Microsoft SQL server, MySQL server)
  • WBEM requests: retrieve and analyze the results of WBEM and WMI queries
  • Web requests: send HTTP(S) requests and analyze the Web server responses
  • String searches and numeric value extractions: fine-tune the monitoring with powerful string searches and advanced numeric value extractions on the return output of all monitored instances
  • BMC Portal integration: all of this is done directly in BMC Portal's user interface. No development and no SDK!

Supported Platforms
The solution runs on BMC Portal. It provides a set of tools that allow the user to interrogate and retrieve information from a managed element through a set of protocols. These protocols are in turn supported by an open-ended range of systems, hardware devices and software components.

Protocols used:
  • HTTP/HTTPS: any Web site and application or device attached to the network providing a Web-based interface
  • JDBC: Microsoft SQL Server 7, 2000 and 2005, Oracle Database Server 8, 9i and 10g , MySQL Server
  • JMX: JBoss 3.2.x, 4.x; JOnAS, WebLogic 8.x, 9.x; WebSphere 5.x, 6.x & standalone JMX applications
  • SNMP: any system or device attached to the network supporting SNMP protocol version 1 (server, storage device, network router, printer etc.)
  • SSH: any UNIX-like system with an SSHd daemon running
  • Telnet: any UNIX-like system with a Telnet daemon running
  • WBEM: any system or device supporting attached to the network supporting the WBEM over HTTP(S) protocol
  • WMI: Windows NT4 systems (requires the installation of the WMI layer); Windows 2000 systems (requires the installation of the WMI layer); Windows XP; Windows Server 2003; Windows Vista; Windows Server 2008
