Network Link Alerts

Hardware Sentry triggers alerts when a break in the network link is detected for the parameters detailed below. By default, this alert is raised ONLY if a previously detected network link is broken.

LinkStatus

The LinkStatus parameter shows the current status of the network interface to the network (i.e. whether or nor plugged-in). By default, Hardware Sentry will trigger a warning if a network interface previously connected to the network is now unplugged. However, it will not trigger an alert for network interfaces that were never connected.

DuplexMode

Monitoring network cards communication performance may be critical to ensure that they run at the expected speed in order to avoid network congestion or any other performance issues.

Most Ethernet cables allow communication in both directions simultaneous between two connected cards, this feature is commonly named "full duplex". However, a defective cable or a simple internal malfunction within the cards can prevent them from communicating both ways simultaneously. In that case, once a party begins receiving a signal, it must wait for the transmitter to stop transmitting, before replying. This communication mode is typically called "half-duplex" and can generate network congestion.

The DuplexMode parameter's value is set to 0 when the network adapter is running in "half-duplex" mode and 1 when in "full-duplex" mode. By default, the DuplexMode parameter triggers a WARNING when an adapter that was running in "full-duplex" suddenly starts communicating in "half-duplex".

LinkSpeed

The LinkSpeed parameter reports the speed that the network adapter and its remote counterpart currently use to communicate with each other. Note that the unit of this parameter is Mbits/sec.

By default, the LinkSpeed parameter triggers a WARNING when the adapter "slows down", i.e. re-negotiates the link speed with its remote counterpart, and is forced (by some circumstances to figure out) to downgrade to a slower communication rate.
