Monitoring EMC Symmetrix Disk Arrays with Sentry's Solutions

Objective

The monitoring of the EMC Symmetrix disk array relies on the SMI-S agent for both hardware and performance monitoring. In general the Symmetrix arrays come along with an embedded service processor in which the SMI-S agent is installed by default. However, the SMI-S Provider can also be installed on a different server which is physically connected to the Symmetrix arrays through an HBA.

Recommendations and Requirements

Sentry Software strongly recommends using the management console (service processor) for monitoring purpose. This method is much faster and reliable when compared to the utilization of a different server as SMI-S proxy. The management console is generally a Windows workstation in which the SMI-S Provider is pre-installed. When this console is used for monitoring the Symmetrix array, it does not need to be added manually to the SMI-S provider as it is automatically detected. You can use the default account credentials or have a separate admin account created for monitoring purposes. Please refer to the “Adding a user” section for details.

The Symmetrix-specific requirements are:

  • Ingenuity operating environment: Version 5668 or higher
  • EMC Solutions Enabler V7.1.2 or later

Sentry Software recommends using the latest available version of the EMC Solutions Enabler.

Setting-up the SMI-S Provider on a Server

Installing EMC SMI-S Provider Version 4.0 and later

The SMI-S Provider kit includes the supported version of Solutions Enabler and can be downloaded from EMC Powerlink®  Website (Registration required). EMC SMI-S Provider can be installed on Windows or Linux. The server on which you install the SMI-S Provider should be physically connected to the Symmetrix disk array via an HBA.

Installing EMC SMI-S Provider on Windows

  1. Download the software from the Powerlink Website.
  2. Save all files and exit all Windows applications.
  3. Launch the self-extracting executable (e.g.: se7000-WINDOWS-x86-SMI.exe). The EMC Solutions Enabler with SMI dialog box appears prompting you to install Solutions Enabler with SMI version x.x.
  4. Click Next.
  5. Click Next to begin the installation. The Destination Folder dialog box opens and prompts you to select an install directory for Solutions Enabler and EMC SMI-S Provider. It is recommended that you choose the default directory.
  6. Click Next to continue. The Ready to Install the Program dialog box opens.
  7. Click Install to begin installing files to your selected folder. This may take several minutes. The Installation Wizard Completed dialog box opens.
  8. Click Finish to complete the setup.

Check if the provider service ‘ECOM’ is running.

Installing EMC SMI-S Provider on Linux

  1. Download the software from the Powerlink Website.
  2. Extract the TAR image to a temporary directory.
  3. Change the directory to the location of the EMC SMI-S Provider kit and run the install script by using the following command:
    cd /‹location of extracted files or CD›/UNIX
    se‹xxxx›_install.sh -install
  4. The installation program will begin copying the files. When complete, the installation program will automatically start the storapid daemon and the cimserver, which may take a few minutes.
  5. When complete, the installation program will return the following confirmation message, which lists EMC Solutions Enabler with SMI-S Provider in the HAS BEEN INSTALLED list:

Testing  the SMI-S Provider

Once the installation of the EMC Provider is complete:

  1. Run the TestSmiProvider.exe program located at:
    1. ‹install_dir›\ECIM\ECOM\bin on Windows platforms
    2. /opt/emc/ECIM/ECOM/bin on Linux platforms
  2. This TestSmiProvider program provides acceptable defaults
  3. Accept defaults for host, connection type and port. The default username and password are respectively LocalDir/admin and #1Password.

Adding User to the EMC Solutions Enabler

To add a new user:

  1. Go to the URL https://‹ipaddress›:5989/ecomconfig
  2. Log in. The default username and password to access the EMC Solutions Enabler with the SMI-S Web interface or SMI-S proxy is:
    1. Username: admin
    2. Password: #1Password
  3. Click Add User and create a user with administration rights. This newly created username can now be used to access the Array Provider.

Note: This interface will also allow you to change the default admin password. 

Configuring Hardware Sentry KM to Monitor EMC Symmetrix Disk Arrays

The SMI-S Provider acts as a proxy with the disk array itself. The Hardware Sentry KM can monitor the disk array through the management console. To setup monitoring of the disk array through proxy, please follow the steps below:

  1. Right-click the local host’s Hardware icon › KM Commands › Add a Remote System or an External Device

    Read the license agreement, accept it and click Next to continue.
  2. Identify the system or device you want to monitor remotely.
    1. System or Device name: Specify the hostname or IP address of the management console. If you wish to use a different server other than the management console, enter the name of the system  where the SMI-S Provider has been installed (e.g.: VMAX)
      Note: If the SMI-S Provider is installed on the local host the name of the local host should be specified and it should be monitored as a remote storage element.
    2. IP address or fully qualified name: Leave this field blank if you specify the host name above.
    3. System or Device type: Select a platform from the drop-down list to specify the system or device type. In this case, Storage (Array, Switch, Library).
    4. Click Next.
    1. To manually select the connector to speed up the discovery process, choose the option “Manually choose which connectors to use”.

      Note: You can also opt to use the automatic detection mode. If you wish to do so please select the WBEM protocol and provide appropriate WBEM credentials.

    2. Select the EMC Disk Arrays connector from the list of connectors and click Next.

    3. Provide a login valid on the CIM server running on the SMI-S installed server. If the password has not been modified for the login admin, type admin and #1Password.

  3. Click Finish to reinitialize Hardware Sentry and trigger a new discovery.

Adding an EMC SMI-S Provider Connection in EMC Disk Array KM for performance monitoring

To add a connection to an EMC SMI-S Provider:

  1. Right-click the Disk Array Icon › KM Commands › Add a Connection to an EMC SMI-S Provider...
  2. Define the provider information:
    1. Enter the server host name (e.g.: VMAX)
    2. Enter the IP address or the fully qualified name.
  3. Click Next
  4. Define the WBEM Credentials:
    1. Enter the Port number that will be used for the connection to the CIM server
    2. Check the Encrypt data using HTTPS protocol box to turn on the encryption when performing WBEM queries, if necessary
    3. Enter the Login and Password that will be used for the connection to the CIM server

Note: When the login and password are left blank the default PATROL credentials will automatically be used for the connection

Click Finish to save your settings
